West Mersea -
Your perfect day

After a lazy breakfast at the Blackwater Pearl Cafe, head to the esplanade for a swim, and to make sandcastles. , and go crabbing. Amble on to the oyster bars for a glass of wine and lunch (oysters for you, fish and chips for the children). Take your children up to smart art (next to the art cafe) for a fun art class. You can relax next door in the art cafe with a book and a coffee, before browsing in the Poop deck vintage shop for clothes and shabby chic furniture. Pop into the Chandlery with the family, to buy beach shoes for the children, and a new Joules jumper for yourself. Pick up some foccaccia and olives for later at the cake hole, before wandering home for a barbeque in the garden.

Mersea crabbing

The children just love it. Crabbing off the jetty next to West Mersea's boat yard. Buy your buckets and crabbing lines from the locals shops and head of to the jetty for a little bit fun and see if you can get the most crabs. The children will want to do it again and again so next time pop over to the beach on East Mersea when the tide is out and you will find even more.

West Mersea Poop Deck

Mersea Island's finest specialists in vintage, antiques and furniture for home and garden. Treat yourself to a quirky English deck chair and take it to the beach. Pick up some gifts with a nautical theme, even if you're not a born water-baby, there will still be something to 'hook' your attention.

West Mersea Cake Hole
Next door but one to the Art Cafe at West Mersea is the 'Cake Hole. Following years of being asked for their salad dressing, red onion marmalade etc. and the increasing need for a bigger kitchen, they have a shop selling all manner of delicious things.

A wide variety of cakey delights; some old favourites with a few new faces - all homemade on site. Maggie’s amazing red onion marmalade, their own honey mustard dressing, a whole host of teas and coffees – both to drink in and take back to the cottage.

Sailing in Mersea

What better way to celebrate the summer than with a nautical holiday.

Mersea Island, for the family, offers sailing for the day or taking a boat trip out into the estuary, with the water taxi or the quirky foot ferry to Brightlingsea, and visit the heated outdoor pool.

In summer Mersea becomes a summer's sporting bonanza town with the famous Mersea Week and West Mersea Regatta.

Winter break ideas:

Take yourself up to the Art Cafe for breakfast and capuccino, then walk the dog on the beach. Visit the wine bar or the Victory Inn for lunch, before going to East Mersea Cudmore Grove country park. The area is a favorite spot for birdwatchers, with other wildlife reserves nearby.

Or visit East Mersea vineyards and cafe. Pop in to the Coast Inn and have a pre dinner beer by the open fire. You can stay and listen to live music here too some nights. Snuggle up back home at the cottage with a hot chocolate, a book and the woodburning stove.

Mersea oysters

Everyone knows that Mersea has the best tasting oysters in the whole world. An important business of the island is the "seeding", nurturing and harvesting of the local oyster beds. Mersea Island oysters travel well and are appreciated worldwide.

East Mersea

Visit Cudmore Grove Country Park. The park includes a sandy beach backed by a large expanse of open grassland, perfect for summer games, picnics and taking in the views.

Spring and autumn see a variety of visitors from all over the world. Migrating birds often stop here as they arrive on the east coast. Some stay for the summer, others are just passing through, and occasionally rare and unexpected birds arrive, blown off course by offshore winds.

The winter too brings with it a variety of wading birds and wildfowl, including large flocks of brent geese which come to feed on the grazing marshes. The grassland is also rich in animal life and a haven for butterflies and more wildlife can be spotted from the hide overlooking the pond.

Visit the Mersea Wildlife website.
